Abstract

This critical approach to Caetano Veloso’s autobiographic book Verdade Tropical, analyzes the cultural and political dimensions of Tropicália, a movement in which this artist played a decisive role with his music and shows. This article questions the distance Tropicália took from traditional left-wing positions, as well as its criticism of the latter: on the one hand, Tropicália’s misleading depiction about populism and, on the other, its unconcern with measures taken by the dictatorship in the name of the people. Although he sustains that this position anticipates the social disengagement that characterizes post-modernism, the author admits the political left-wing has not been able to propose a critical analysis of the period nor of the people as a politically viable subject.
