Abstract

Generally, alcohol intake initiates during adolescence. Alcohol drinking during this developmental stage is considered as a health-risk. Alcohol drinking motives and difficulties in emotion regulation have been related to alcohol use related problems. Aim: to assess dificulties in emotion regulation, coping and enhancement motives as predictive factors upon alcohol use related problems. Aditionally, we aimed to describe alcohol drinking problems in this sample. Methods: 332 adolescents aged 16-19 from Córdoba city and surroundings, Argentina. We used the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Drinking Motives Questionnaire, short form (DMQ-R SF) questionnaires. Analysis: descriptive, bivariate correlations and multiple regression analysis were run. Results: as shown by the ANOVA, adolescents with hazardous drinking and those with probable dependence disorder had higher difficulties in emotion regulation. Total AUDIT score positively correlated DERS total scores and motives to cope and enhancement. Difficulties with impulse control (DERS) and coping and enhancement drinking motives (DMQ-R SF) account for the 25% of variance on total AUDIT score. Conclusions: these variables are of potential importance to the design and development of preventive and treatment interventions for alcohol related use disorders.
